THE SACRAMENT OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST & THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE AND RECONCILIATION "At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood. This he did in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages until he should come again, and so to entrust to his beloved Spouse, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a Paschal banquet 'in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us."
— Catechism of the Catholic Church
"Those who approach the sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God's mercy for the offense committed against him, and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins and which by charity, by example, and by prayer labors for their conversion."
— Catechism of the Catholic Church
First Communion requirements:
Students must attend Faith Formation (CCD) for two consecutive years, at the end of which they shall receive the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist (students must have reached the age of 9 by this time). Children should begin their two years of preparation as they enter 2nd grade in school.
After their first year, students will be considered First Communion candidates and will be expected to attend Faith Formation (CCD) for First Communion/Reconciliation preparation an additional day (Wednesday) during the second year of their instruction. It is during this year that First Communion candidates receive the sacrament of Reconciliation; students will experience their first confession around November.
Please note: the Catechism of the Catholic Church does not require sponsors/Godparents for children to receive the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist; thus, it has been decided by our parish that First Communion candidates will not have sponsors this year.
